Chapter Thirteen

Callie

THE PHONE SHOOK IN her hand long after the detective hung up. A moment ago, she was lost in the moment—lost in Dean, but now...

How was it possible to experience such highs and lows in a matter of minutes?

“Callie?” Dean’s voice broke through the numbness settling inside her brain. He sounded worried, frightened even. “Callie, look at me.”

Strong hands cupped the side of her face until she blinked and reoriented herself. She glanced down. Her phone dropped by her side, but she was still planted on Dean’s lap. Glancing back up at him, she found her voice. “They found him.”

Dean frowned. “Found who? You’re not making any sense.”

Tears filled her eyes, and her throat burned like someone held a lighter over the tender flesh. It took everything in her not to lose it. “The guy who killed my parents. They found him.”

Dawning flickered in Dean’s expression, his eyes widening for a fraction of a second. “That’s a good thing, right?”

She glanced to his lap and slid off him and over to the other side of the sofa where she shook her head. “He’s dead.”

She heard the intake of breath beside her, but before Dean could ask, she filled him in, repeating in a robotic voice what the detective had told her. “There was a bad crash. The guy died. There were booze bottles in the car and no witnesses, so they ran the DNA at the crime scene to be sure no one else was driving who might have fled. The DNA came back in their system. It was a match with the blood found at the scene of my parents’ hit and run. He was the one who killed them. He just left them there, and now...” Voice hitching, a sob burst from her throat.

She covered her mouth, but it was no defense against the tidal wave of grief crashing over her. Shaking, she struggled with her composure. Not until Dean reached out and pulled her back into his arms, did she allow her tears to fall.

“It’s okay,” he whispered against her ear. “It’ll be okay.”

If only she believed him.
